What is Electricity?

Electricity is the movement of electric charge.

When electric charges move through a suitable path, such as a wire, we get electric current.

In simple words:

Voltage is the electrical pressure that pushes current.

Current is the flow of electric charge.

What is Voltage?

Voltage is the electrical potential difference that pushes current through a circuit.

The unit of voltage is Volt (V).

Some common examples are:

  • Household electricity is generally around 220–240V AC.
  • A typical car battery is 12V DC.
  • Solar panels can produce different voltages depending on their specifications and connection.

Voltage alone does not determine how much power an appliance uses. Current is also important.

What is Current?

So, the appliance is using approximately 440W of electrical power.

These three electrical quantities are very important:

Voltage = V

Current = I

Resistance = R

Ohm's Law

V = I × R

Another important formula is:

P = V × I

These simple formulas are useful when working with electrical circuits, batteries, solar systems, inverters, chargers, and electronic equipment.

What is a Short Circuit?

A short circuit occurs when electricity finds an unintended path with very low resistance.
